November 2025

Hey there,

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible things our customers are doing with composites. From world-title-winning surfskis to river-cleaning signage and airborne ambition at Red Bull Flugtag. These are the stories that make what we do so rewarding.

Point Fibreglass Builds World-Champion Surfski with Basalt + Epoxy

Durban-based Point Fibreglass recently took a bold leap in materials innovation – introducing basalt fabric into their high-performance surfski construction, supported by Aerontec’s epoxy systems and local technical support.

After rigorous testing, the team found basalt offered the perfect balance of stiffness, impact resistance, weight reduction and cost-effectiveness – ideal for the demanding surf conditions skis face.

They put it to the test at the 2024 World Surfski Championships in Durban, where over 20 skis were written off… but not a single one of theirs.

  • Zero failures across all skis using basalt-based layups
  • 2 world titles and a silver medal for founder Mark Lewin
  • Lower weight and higher durability than previous builds

As Mark summed it up: “This material has a place in all our future construction.

Flying High (and Splashing Down) at Red Bull Flugtag

Aerontec’s Arno Syfert recently lent his skills (and nerves) to the Spec-Savers Spect X team at Red Bull Flugtag Cape Town 2025.

Using Aerontec-supplied composites, the team designed a lightweight aircraft and tested it the only way possible: towed behind a bakkie at speed! On the big day, the craft caught its tail on launch, resulting in a dramatic splash, but not before showcasing the spirit of innovation (and courage) we love.

  • Aerontec materials used throughout the design
  • Full design support from Arno, start to finish
  • Great exposure for composites in a high-energy setting

“A fun, memorable project,” said the team, and we couldn’t agree more.

RecoCore Tooling Board Powers Plastic-Free River Signage

The Litterboom Project, a local organisation working to remove plastic waste from South Africa’s rivers, recently selected RecoCore recycled tooling board for a signage initiative with sustainability at its core.

Made from PVC dust recovered at our Cape Town facility, RecoCore transforms production waste into a lightweight, machinable, and environmentally responsible material.

Used alongside river-recovered plastics, this project delivered more than just a sign – it told a story.

  • Made entirely from reclaimed materials
  • Clean machining and professional finish
  • A proud circular-economy success story

We’re excited to see where RecoCore will show up next.
